Private Retreats

A popular form of retreat available at Mount Angel Abbey is the personal retreat (guests are welcome to be silent). Many people long to rest with the Lord in their own “monastic cell” while being nourished by the daily celebrations of the Divine Office and the Holy Eucharist in which they participate with the monks in the Abbey Church.

One may wish to make a private retreat for one or more reasons such as: a time of rest from the hectic pace of the world, for quiet in order to better listen to God, for a time reflection and discernment regarding situations and important decisions, to study, to seek God's healing grace, or simply to be with God.

Private retreats typically take place Monday to Thursday as availability permits, since most weekends are occupied with group retreats. There are exceptions such as the Sacred Triduum (Easter) and Christmas, and a few other times throughout the year. These openings will be posted on the Guest House calendar, so please check back often. The Abbey Guest House is an extension of our monastery home. The monks appreciate your understanding for those times when we are not available to receive guests. It helps us arrange your stay if reservations are made in advance (same day reservations are typically not available). Apart from the exceptions noted here, Sunday is not available for arrival or overnight stays.

A private retreat is typically two or three days but may be as brief as an overnight stay. The Guest House office will do what is possible to accommodate your needs. A Private Retreat can be made individually or with a companion or even a small group of friends.

The retreat rooms of St. Benedict Hall are without television and air conditioning, and are generally not intended for use as "motel" accommodations. Our Blessed Father Saint Benedict teaches in the Holy Rule that monks should have a special concern for "pilgrims" and for the poor. Following this counsel, the monks of Mount Angel Abbey welcome all who truly seek God, even if they are simply passing through or do not of the ability to offer the suggested stipend for food and lodging.

Please contact the Guest House office for availability or further information. Please telephone 503-845-3025 during office hours: Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. or via e-mail:
