Caring for Bricks, Mortar, and Tile
For more than 140 years, we monks of Mount Angel have been privileged to dwell on this beautiful Hilltop. Through the decades, we have maintained a life of continuous prayer in which the praise of God is given primacy of place. This rhythm of prayer is what marks this place and makes it this place.
Here, we have buildings that house monks, seminarians, and retreatants. We also have a beautiful church, an active academic center, a gymnasium, and a world-class library. Some of these buildings are upwards of 90 years old. Thank you for helping us maintain our Hilltop home, where life is lived with the intention of sharing the peace, beauty, and open space with all who come.

Roof Repair
Aquinas Hall
Aquinas Hall, completed in 1932, is the oldest of our seminary buildings and sits in a privileged position on the Hilltop. To the right is the north wing of the monastery, and close by on the left is a magnificent Cedar of Lebanon. The upper levels of Aquinas Hall provide residence rooms for seminarians studying theology and a small Blessed Sacrament chapel. On the lower level are the kitchen and dining room for seminarians, banked on the north side with windows looking out to the pastoral Willamette Valley.
After more than 90 years of service to the seminary community, the roof above the kitchen and dining room had developed serious leaks, and the brickwork was overdue for complete pressure washing, tuckpointing where needed, and sealing.
Anselm Hall
The original tile roof and brick walls are classic Hilltop architecture and finish. After 70 years of wear and tear, however, the entire roof needs repair. It will need to be worked on one section at a time, beginning with removing the tiles and laying them on the surrounding grass and parking spaces. After the underlayment damage is repaired and new felt installed, the tiles will be reinstalled.Repairing the beautiful multilayered roof of this iconic Hilltop building was a labor-intensive process. It required wraparound scaffolding and tile specialists familiar with the Abbey’s clay roofs.

Bricks & Mortar
In addition to the major roof repair projects on Anselm and Aquinas halls, several of our other buildings were overdue for repair and sealing of brickwork. This work entailed professional pressure washing, tuckpointing where needed, and sealing the brickwork.-
