Inaugural Address 2009

The Seminary opened its academic year on August 31, including an inaugural lecture by Dr. Creighton Lindsay on the topic of “The Pastoral.” In an enthusiastically received presentation, Dr. Lindsay compared the literary and theological senses of the term pastoral, using a chilling event from his own childhood to illustrate how both senses of the word are united by longing. In the religious sense, the longing is to serve, and in the literary sense, the longing is to regain the innocence lost to experience. Dr. Lindsay’s storytelling skill made his introduction to the academic year a compelling journey for students, staff, and faculty.
